As the end of the school-year quickly approaches, I wonder what this summer has in store for me. Being a teacher has given me great joy in the two months out of the year where I can relax and rejuvenate my body for yet another exciting year filled with new learning. Summer is that time of year where I can put on my hat as a mommy that I had been longing for during the school year. However, it is also the time of year for new learning for me as a teacher to occur so I can rebuild my stamina and knowledge for the new year to come. All in all...summer is GREAT!
Yes, the 2007-2008 school year only has 3 days to go. My students are restless and can barely stay focused enough to complete math assignments like they did a couple weeks back. It is tough holding on to the energy to keep all 21 of my students learning during this time of the year. Text books were turned in today...but we really don't need them for Math or Science. However, we do need the motivation and we do not need the silly little dances that keep happening from time to time. The other day I must have seen at least five students do a little jig at some point during the day. If that doesn't scream excitement...I don't know what does!
Summer is a time for me to build up my relationships with my own children who are happy to be able to spend some quality "mommy" time with me. There are days when we can just lay around in our pajamas and play indoors all day, read stories, watch cartoons or movies. There are pool days with friends and family that have that unique sense of fun. Or there are the days when we decide to brave the sandy beaches and build sand castles and search for the perfect sea shell. Of course we have our special zoo trips and theme park days that will be in our memory forever.
Even though my time is consumed the most by my children over the summer, I still manage to sneak in some learning myself. Whether it be a graduate level course this summer I am taking, the new teaching blog on the "Ning", or my educational magazines I like to read, I always seem to get in the fuel that feeds my passion of teaching. It really gets me pumped back up for the new school year which is filled with new unique students who will bring more to my classroom than I had ever imagined. I think it is amazing how many people I meet...and I really mean get to know well...just because I am a teacher. I guess that needs to be it's own special blog though.
So there you have it...my summer is about to begin and I cannot wait! I will miss my students I had this year and I will hold onto memories forever.
