Report Writing
My homeroom began Report Writing this week in Writing! All of the students seemed so excited about sharing a topic that they like. We discussed how to pick a good topic, so it isn't too broad. There were some really great topics chosen and I cannot wait to hear about the topics after they become experts on them!
Please be sure to allow your child to check out books, search the Internet, or use other research materials such as encyclopedias to complete the research. I am asking that they bring these materials into school so the majority of the work can be done at school with me during Writer's Workshop. The students will be allowed to type their reports as it closer to the due date and rough drafts have been revised and edited. The time frame allotted for this unit will be until the second week of January. We will begin presentations on January 10th and go through the week until the 15th.
Along with the report, I have shared with the students that I would also like some other form of creative piece with the report. The students are allowed to pick what they would like to do for this portion of the grade. Some ideas are a poster, model, powerpoint, poem, commercial, or song. A rubric will be created with the class on the report and the creative piece so the students know the expectations.
I really look forward to learning more about what your child finds interesting!!

Destination Success Update
Just a quick update:
There are other tasks on the main screen when you sign in. I believe the district placed these on the student's page. You are not required to complete these tasks, but you may if you wish.
You are only required to do the "Adding Fractions" activity this week! This is what we are learning in class right now.
Thank you!!! :)

Destination Success

A letter went home today about Destination Success.
Each week I will assign a new activity for the students to complete. I am able to run reports to see which students complete the assignments. If I see 100% complete next to your child's name, they will get a 100% averaged into the homework category in the gradebook. Of course, if there is a 0% next to your child's name, I will have to put a 0% in my gradebook. I hope that I do not have to do this!
If your home does not have Internet access, we have set up computer lab hours before and after school on certain days. It is your child's responsibility to attend these hours if the work cannot be completed at home. Please write a note in the planner if this pertains to you.
Destination Success is a great way for your child to learn at their own pace and clear up any misconceptions they may have in math!

Be There

I recently read this on the DCPS website and thought it would be nice to share...
Be There is a research-based, multimedia campaign designed to get parents more involved in their children’s education. One hundred percent of the research studies compiled by The Parent Institute* indicate that parent involvement has a significant impact on student success. The statistics show that with as little as a one-third increase in parent participation, school achievement scores increase dramatically. It only takes a small increase in parent input to see measurable results in student output!
Here are six key research facts from some of the most important research findings: (Reprinted with permission from The Parent Institute.)
The family provides the child’s primary educational environment.
Involving parents in their children’s formal education improves student achievement.
High scoring schools and districts have high levels of parent involvement.
The benefits last a lifetime, they are not confined to early childhood or the elementary level; there are strong effects from involving parents continuously through middle and high school.
Minorities have the most to gain. Children from low-income and minority families benefit greatly when schools involve parents. Parents do not have to be well educated to help.
School and home are connected. We cannot look at the school and the home in isolation from one another; we must see how they interconnect with each other and with the world at large.
When you connect with your child every day, your child benefits for life. When he or she knows you care and are concerned about education, the following occurs:
Achievement in school improves; students earn higher grades and test scores and enroll in higher-level programs
Children want to go to school
Courses are passed, credits earned and students are promoted to the next grade
Self-confidence improves
Children have better social skills and behavior at home and at school
Students graduate from high school and go on to postsecondary education
